About SmartBasement Founder, John Cochren

John J. Cochren P.Eng CPM

Born in Hamilton Ontario, raised in Burlington, graduated from McMaster University in Civil Engineering. Began his 40 year career as house builder, constructing over 800 homes in the Hamilton area; ventured into civil and general contracting, building hotels, nursing homes, as well as schools, apartment buildings, extensive civil work on the Welland Canal; Last notable project was the construction of the Peller Estates Winery in Niagara On The Lake.

For the last 10 years John has worked as a foundation contractor, President of Cochren Foundation & Repair, specializing in residential foundations throughout southern Ontario, offering innovative engineered solutions and construction for house settlement, bowed walls, basement lowering, temporary and permanent timber shoring/retaining walls, waterproofing, and more.

John’s latest innovation is the development of SmartFoundation – an environmentally-friendly alternative for additions to homes without the need for digging and mess, offering a foundation slab of up to 500 square feet, ready to build on in just one day.

After seeing 400 to 500 homes per year, John realized how fragile and vulnerable finished basements are to even the smallest amount of water on the floor. He concluded that the future in healthy basement living is in prevention, not re-building. With this in mind he set to develop and promote methods and products that would produce a sustainable basement – one that offers protection from mould and water damage, as well as extensively reduces the risk of flooding.
